With the great number of airfields that were created in Essex during the second world war you are likely to spot one sooner or later on a balloon ride over Essex. Taking off from our site at Gosfield Shopping Village you can see the old runway of Gosfield Airfield just north of the village and further to the north west the larger and still intact Wethersfield Airfield where the RAF still has a gliding school.
Should the wind take your balloon ride more to the north of Gosfield you may drift near Hedingham Castle. This Norman Castle created in 1086 has a fine stone keep still in good condition today which is a popular visitor attraction. The Georgian house which is part of the castle and its grounds is occupied as a living residence by related descendants of the de Vere family who built the original Norman keep.
