It is easy to see the perimeter and runways of the original airfield at Earls Colne as you fly over Essex in a hot air balloon. A World War II base for B17 Flying Fortress aircraft from the United States Air Force, this was one of 27 airfields hastily constructed during the early years of the war. It is something special to take off in a hot air balloon from a site with such a strong aviation history.
